Luang Por Viradhammo (formerly Vitauts Akers) was born in Germany in 1947 to Latvian refugee parents. His journey in Buddhism began in India in 1969, where he was introduced to the teachings of the Buddha by the late Sāmanera Bodhesako.
In 1973, Luang Por ordained as a novice monk at Wat Mahathat, Thailand, and a year later, he took full bhikkhu ordination under Ajahn Chah at Wat Pah Pong. He was one of the pioneering residents at Wat Pah Nanachat, the international forest monastery established by Ajahn Chah.
Over the decades, Luang Por played a pivotal role in establishing Theravāda monasteries around the globe:
- Supported Luang Por Sumedho at Hampstead Vihāra in London
- Contributed to the founding of Chithurst and Harnham Monasteries in the UK
- Established Bodhinyānārāma Monastery in New Zealand in 1985
From 1995 to 2002, he assisted at Amarāvati Monastery in the UK and later cared for his mother in Ottawa for nine years. Currently, he resides full-time at Tisarana Buddhist Monastery in Canada, continuing to teach and inspire practitioners worldwide.
