Building Repairs Project 2025: Sponsor a Tile, Donate a Statue, or Make a Donation

Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Dhamma,

In June 2023, we launched a call for fundraising to help us undertake building repairs that emerged after 25 years of occupying the premises at Lor 24A Geylang, of which a very important issue was repairing the fairly large roof of the building.

We met our fundraising target then and stopped further fundraising, thinking that it was sufficient. We also started replacing our aging false ceilings and improving our piping systems. We worked with a construction company, architect, and engineers to draw up plans for the main renovation work, and we were ready to start once we got final approvals from the various government agencies as was needed.

Alas, as we progressed in this project over the past 1.5 years, we found that further work needed to be done, particularly to meet new building standards. Namely, new URA guidelines state that air-con compressors are no longer allowed to be installed on the façade of the building. We tried to see if there was a simpler way forward, but there was simply no option but to undertake additional major renovation that entails the complete replacement of our air con system.

What we thus need to do now is construct a concrete platform above the false ceiling of the monks’ quarters, completely revamp our aircon system to a centralised one that will sit on that platform.

Toward this end, we need another $300,000, in addition to the $150k fundraising target we successfully met in 2023.

To recap, these are the key works we will be undertaking:

• Replacement of all false ceilings at Level 2 (this has been carried out for the Level 2 Classroom)
• Improvements for piping through the Library (has been carried out)
• Installation of new, centralised aircon system
• Installation of concrete platform on fourth floor to facilitate installation of aircon system
• Replacement of all roof tiles, which number in the thousands
  • Rectifying plant invasion across the façade as well as painting the building

Even though our Funfair in the past few years have been quite successful, the cost of the building works now go well beyond what we have raised in the past 1.5 years. We are now thus appealing for your financial support to help us complete these building repairs work and continue our work at the Buddhist Library.

You can sponsor roof tiles or make a donation directly to our Renovation Fund, and we will place the names of sponsors/donors on a plaque which we will put up within the Library premises. You can also choose to donate a Buddha Niche Statue, of which there are only 45 left as of the time of writing.

The Buddhist Library has come a long way and this would not have been possible without the support of its members and devotees. We hope you will continue to lend us your support and generosity so that we can continue to be of service to you.

在2023年6月，我们发起了一次筹款呼吁，以帮助我们进行建筑维修。我们入驻芽笼24A巷（Lor 24A Geylang）的场地已有25年。其中一个非常重要的问题是修复建筑相当大面积已经开始脱落的瓷砖屋顶。

我们达到当时$150,000筹款目标就停止了进一步的筹款，因为我们以为资金已经足够。同时，我们开始更换老化的假天花板，并改善管道系统。我们与建筑公司、建筑师和工程师合作，制定了主要翻修工程的计划，并向相关政府机构申请的批准。

然而，在过去一年半的项目推进过程中，我们发现还需要额外的工程，特别是为了符合新的建筑标准。具体来说，新的市区重建局（URA）规定不允许在建筑外墙安装空调压缩机。我们尝试寻找更简单的解决方案，但最终别无选择，只能进行额外的大型翻修工程，包括彻底更换空调系统。我们现在需要在僧侣宿舍的假天花板上方建造一个混凝土平台，并将整个空调系统改造为集中式系统，安装在该平台上。

为此，我们需要额外筹集$300,000。

总结而言，我们将进行以下关键工程：

  • 改善穿过图书馆的管道系统（已完成）

  • 更换所有屋顶瓦片，数量达数千片
  • 清除外墙植物入侵并粉刷建筑物

尽管过去几年我们的义卖会取得了一定成功，但目前的建筑维修费用远远超出了过去一年半所筹集的资金。因此，我们诚挚地向大家呼吁，希望您能在财务上支持我们，帮助我们完成这项建筑维修工程，以便继续在佛教图书馆开展我们的工作。
