Topic : Introspection in Early Buddhism: A Study of Sati in the Four Satipaṭṭhānas

Contemporary philosophers define introspection as the process of understanding one’s current or recent mental states. This chapter explores the idea of sati in the practice of satipaṭṭhāna in the context of early Buddhism. I argue that sati, in the context of practicing satipaṭṭhāna, involves a kind of introspection as defined within contemporary philosophy. This chapter investigates the role of introspection in early Buddhist teachings, highlighting its significance as a beneficial practice for well-being and a tool for achieving enlightenment. Ultimately, this chapter argues for the continued relevance of introspection in both psychological and spiritual contexts.
