About The Author

W.S. Karunaratne entered the University of Ceylon in 1948 winning the University Entrance Scholarship. At the University he won numerous scholarships and prizes and obtained the B.A. First Class Honours Degree in 1952. In the same year he began his career as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Pali and Buddhist Civilization. He obtained his doctorate from the University of London in 1965 for his doctoral thesis on “The Theory of Causality in Early Buddhism”. In the same year he was chosen F.L Woodward Prizeman of the School of Oriental and African Studies. University of London. Just twelve years after his appointment as an Assistant Lecturer, he was appointed Professor of Buddhist Philosophy, University of Ceylon in 1964, where he taught until 1973. Thereafter, he assumed duties as the Professor of Buddhist Philosophy at the Vidyalankara University and functioned in that capacity until his premature death in 1986. He has served also as visting Professor at many universities in various parts of the United States, Thailand and Burma.
